Honor Magic V: Learn the first foldable smartphone from Honor

Honor has officially formalized the Honor Magic V in China, its first foldable smartphone. The smartphone, which is marketed at $1,500, presents a beautiful technical sheet, with an external display that offers the same experience as a classic flagship, an advanced technology platform and an interesting image composition.

Honor held a conference today to introduce the Honor Magic V foldable phone. The theme of the conference didn't come as a surprise, as the brand broke the news widely on social media. This foldable smartphone has a flexible screen. So it will naturally compete with my Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Oppo Find N.

Honor Magic V: Meet the first phone Honor's foldable smartphone

Technical sheet of Honor Magic V

The Honor Magic V features an external screen format. Honor cites a study here that shows that the user of the foldable phone uses the external screen more than the main screen. Hence the idea of presenting a board in the standard format. Where we find an external screen measuring 6.45 inches, in 21: 9 format. The screen is of type OLED with Full HD + definition, and with a resolution of 431 pixels per inch. The refresh rate is 120Hz and the brightness is 1000 nits max.

The internal screen is also an OLED. It measures 7.9 inches. These are the largest internal displays of a smartphone similar in design to the Z Fold 3. Honor is comparing this phone to an iPad mini. And this is logical: the screen of the tablet is 8.3 inches. This phone is only 0.4 inches smaller than it. The definition is equivalent to Full HD (2272 x 1984 pixels) for a resolution of 381 pixels per inch. The refresh rate is 90 Hz and the brightness is 800 nits.

The hinge consists of 213 parts and is made of carbon, zirconium and titanium. The smartphone measures 6.7mm when open and 14.3mm when closed. Which makes it one of the thinnest foldable smartphones. In terms of performance, we find Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the latest Qualcomm chipset. Engraved with a precision of 4 nanometers. 5G compatible, thanks to the popular Snapdragon X65 modem with which Samsung recently broke download speed records. Obviously, Magic V integrates two batteries. The battery capacity it offers is 4750 mAh, which is higher than what you can find in Oppo or Samsung. The smartphone is compatible with 66W fast charging. Honor also promises to recharge 50% in less than 15 minutes.

In terms of image sensors, we find six important: two 42MP selfie sensors, three sensors in the main unit and a ToF camera that works as laser autofocus. The three main sensors are 50MP models. So Honor plays the homogenization card. Main sensor with aperture at f / 1.9. The secondary sensor has a wide-angle lens with an f / 2.2 aperture. And an enhanced sensor that does not take pictures, but improves the pictures of others. But there is no optical stabilizer and optical zoom.

Price and release date

The rest of the technical sheet is fairly standard. We notice the presence of a fingerprint reader on the edge, below the power button, as well as balanced speakers (also located on the edges). The smartphone runs on Magic UI 6.0 (based on Android 12), the new version of Honor's interface. The Magic V is available in three colours: metallic gray, black and orange.

Two configurations will be available: 12 GB RAM with 256 GB storage and 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage. The price starts at 9,999 yuan and goes up to 10,999 yuan, or just under $1,500 for the first version and just over $1,500 for the second. The commercial launch in China is scheduled for the 18th, a week after the pre-order.
