Netflix releases its electronic games on smartphones

Netflix, the online entertainment network, is launching its first electronic games for smartphones worldwide as it seeks to break into the subscription games market.

The company took its first steps on Tuesday, by releasing updates to the Netflix application on Android smartphones, and through this update, the games available for download are displayed.

The company started offering five games for smartphone users that can be subscribed and downloaded.

The company promises that more games in the future will be without ads while playing and without in-app purchases like those common in other mobile games.

Among the five games that were launched with the service, two are related to the famous Stranger Things series of the live streaming giant, namely:

Although this is just the beginning of a long journey, we're excited to offer a gaming experience different from what's available today - exclusive games with no ads, no in-app payments, and will be included in your Netflix membership package," the company said in its announcement Tuesday. .

While the initial games have relatively simple graphics and easy gameplay, Netflix says it's in the very early stages, but eventually plans to design games for "all types of players."

Netflix launches its mobile games

"Whether you're craving a simple game that you can start from scratch, or an exciting experience that lets you delve deeper into your favorite stories, we want to start building a library of games that offer something for everyone," wrote Mike Verdu, the company's head of game development.

Verdo is a great asset to Netflix, as he previously worked for the gaming giant EA and later at Facebook, where he worked on augmented reality and virtual reality.

Coming soon to Apple

This week's release is only for Android phones and tablets, but the company said it will soon release games for Apple iOS devices "in the coming months."

Apple has previously resisted attempts by other companies to put "its own stores within its Apple Store", especially with regard to games.

When Microsoft initially launched the Game Pass streaming service in 2020, Apple prevented the app from appearing in the iPhone App Store, arguing that any app containing 100 games must all be listed in its store individually (meaning each game on its own). .

In the end, Microsoft resorted to broadcasting games through Apple's mobile Safari browser, instead of placing its games on the App Store.

Netflix did not mention that it had any similar problems with Netflix games, and said that getting to Android first is because the launch of the games is "still in its early stages."

Despite the delay in reaching Apple customers, Microsoft has become the dominant company in the game subscription market so far.

Microsoft's Xbox Games Pass includes most of the company's game studio releases the day they go on sale, many of which can be played on an Xbox or gaming PC or streamed online to phones and tablets.

It is estimated that tens of millions of subscribers pay between £7.99 and £10.99 a month, depending on the features they need.
